To extend notebook battery life with hybrid drive

The trick is that the hard drive contains a 1Gb flash memory chip from Samsung's OneNAND family. Incoming data is directly recorded to the chip. When the chip is about full, the hard drive wakes up, takes the data,laptop batteries,records it and goes back into idle.

Typically, hard drives rotate. Hard drive motors, along with LCD screens, are two of the largest consumers of power inside a laptop.

In the hybrid, the drive rarely spins. In the prototype hybrid being shown off on Monday at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, the drive spins only about 30 to 45 seconds every half hour, said Ivan Greenberg, director of strategic marketing for Samsung Semiconductor. The goal is to get it to 30 to 45 seconds for an hour.

Why notebook batteries don't last long?

 Ever since I switched from using a desktop PC to a notebook for all of my daily computer tasks I never bothered to look back. It is just so convenient to always be able to carry all your work with you wherever you go. In reality I am not much of a road warrior though so most of the time the notebook battery sits on my desk for weeks on end attached to its docking station.

Obviously when plugged into the mains during the day the notebook's battery never gets used. However every time you turn the notebook off at the end of the day it will drain the battery ever so slightly overnight and will start to top it off again when it gets turned back on. The question is whether that will wear down the battery quicker than if you simply drain the battery and then reconnect the notebook to the mains adapter to recharge it a few times a day?

Over the past eight months I have done exactly that experiment, by using two identical notebooks. One has been connected to the mains adapter all the time, being used for approximately eight hours every day, the other has had its battery drained and recharged, usually once a day, but has also been running for eight hours every day. The results are somewhat surprising. The notebook that has been connected to the mains has a flat battery now, basically you get about ten maybe twenty minutes worth of power out of it before the notebook goes into standby. The notebook that has had its dell 6y270 battery,dell c1295 battery,dell inspiron 500m battery cycled does not offer the plus four hours of battery life it used to give, but is still good for more than three hours of use.

So although hardly conclusive it does provide some insights into why some notebook batteries go flat after not being used for months. Will the reusable alkaline battery have a future?

The reusable alkaline was introduced in 1992 as an alternative to disposable batteries. The battery was promoted as a low-cost power source for consumer goods. Attempts were made to open markets for wireless communications, medical and defense. But the big breakthrough never came. Today, the reusable alkaline occupies only a small market and its use is limited to portable entertainment devices and flashlights. The lack of market appeal is regrettable when considering the environmental benefit of having to discard fewer batteries. It is said that the manufacturing cost of the reusable alkaline is only marginally higher than the primary cell.

The idea of recharging alkaline batteries is not new. Although not endorsed by manufacturers, ordinary alkaline batteries have been recharged in households for many years. Recharging these batteries is only effective, however, if the cells have been discharged to less than 50% of their total capacity. The number of recharges depends solely on the depth of discharge and is limited to a few cycles at best. With each recharge, the amount of capacity the cell can hold is reduced. To compare the operating cost between the standard and reusable alkaline, a study was done on flashlight batteries for hospital use. Pioneer work with the lithium battery began in 1912 under G.N. Lewis but it was not until the early 1970s when the first non-rechargeable lithium batteries became commercially available. lithium is the lightest of all metals, has the greatest electrochemical potential and provides the largest energy density for weight.

Attempts to develop rechargeable lithium Toshiba laptop battery failed due to safety problems. Because of the inherent instability of lithium metal, especially during charging, research shifted to a non-metallic lithium battery using lithium ions. Don't throw away used rechargeable batteries and cell phones! Recycle them!

All personnel handling RBRC collection boxes should follow these safety guidelines to ensure safe storage and shipping of used rechargeable batteries and cell phones. Call2Recycle mandates a ONE rechargeable dell laptop battery , ONE bag rule. Utilize Call2Recycle-provided collection boxes and bags meeting U.S. DOT requirements to properly insulate individual batteries and cell phones for transport.

RBRC's Call2Recycle program recycles Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), Nickel Zinc (Ni-Zn), and Small Sealed Lead (Pb)* rechargeable inspiron 6000 battery found in cellular and cordless phones, cordless power tools, laptop computers, PDAs, two-way radios, camcorders, remote control toys, and other cordless products.

But the problem with these approaches is that they're not coordinated across the entire device.
