quality media and laminating now offers durasol, a large format printer pvc white film for solvent and uv-curable solvent printers. this satin coated, tear resistant film is specially coated to accept solvent inks which dry quickly and give a brilliant image. durasol films are waterfast and virtually scratchproof and are available in 8, 12 and 18 mil thicknesses in widths from 36 inches to 54 inches wide. due to durasol films' flatness and durability, it is often used for tradeshow applications like banner stands and panels. durasol films are also used for interior and exterior signage and applications that require a rigid media.

pat pennington, owner of tel-m-off is a little like howard cosell in that he likes to 'tell it like it is.' hence, the name his company sports. if he is not happy with something in his shop, he will tell you about it but not necessarily tell you off. for more than 25 years his memphis, tn-based graphics house has grown to be one of the best in the area. "and, you have a successful formula, you stick with it." so when it came time to add a new wide-format printer to their arsenal, he only needed to hear one name-mimaki. "we've used mimaki large format printers for many years now we've been impressed the way they have stood behind their products and they way their solvent printers have performed," says pennington. tel-m-off had the honor of being the first shop in the country to install the new mimaki jv5-160s wide format printer. "when we heard that the jv5-160s was coming out, we wanted to be one of the first ones to have it. we bought it sight unseen. we have a great relationship with mimaki and the distributor we buy through. they told us 'try it and if you have any problems let us know.' so far it's been in the shop for two months and no complaints." the new jv5-160s provides an ultra-high print speed of 430sq.ft/hr with a new high quality 540x1080 dpi mode, designed for short distance signage and photorealistic applications. the new generation jv5 is said to respond to the needs of power users and quick delivery by using a newly developed print head which carries four times as many nozzles as the jv3 series. in addition to this breakthrough advancement is a recently developed mimaki head configuration of four staggered print heads. pennington was blown away by the speed. "i was really impressed by the actual print speeds. it's enabled us we cut our some of our workflow in half on some jobs. we also liked how the rip software has performed with the printer. we worked very closely with onyx graphics to develop a rip that would work best for us."

environmental factors were at the top of the agenda as the isle of man's large format printers, bridson & horrox, announced that it will replace its two existing presses with a roland 500 machine. the company also included the purchase of a new wohlenberg guillotine, complete with baumann flowline system, as part of the order.
the six-color plus coater b2-format press will provide the cornerstone of a new jdf/jmf production system at the douglas-based solvent printers, linking to an upgraded version of the company's tharstern mis system, and agfa apogee pre-press workflow package.
the company has been partnered by a competitor for some 50 years, but was keen to purchase the most environmentally friendly press to meet its present and future large format printer needs. "environmental issues are at the top of the print buyers' agenda at the moment", said darren horrox, managing director of the company. "however, a greener way of working can actually also help us to reduce our costs."

"the new roland 500 press will run alcohol free, will provide for chemical recycling, and the significantly more efficient make-ready will mean that we can set the press up with one-third less run-up sheets. the brush based wash up system on the new press also means that we will be recycling less cleaning rags. reduced waste means less cost for us as a business because all of the waste that we produce has to be collected together and returned to the mainland for recycling."
bridson & horrox's new machine will provide for six-color printing and inline coating, as well as inline perforating and creasing. it replaces five-color and six-color competitor presses, with the shift pattern at the company extending from four-day, 24-hour to five-day, 24-hour. "the faster running speed of the new press - up to 18,000 sheets per hour - faster make-ready, and more efficient production with the jdf/jmf system will allow us to produce more work in a shorter space of time on the one machine", said darren horrox.
bridson & horrox is the isle of man's largest print business. the business has recently attained both the investors in people and iso 9001 accreditations.
